City of Girls is absolutely fascinating. I listened to the audiobook narrated by actress, Blair Brown and often would sit in my car LONG after I got home because I was just captivated. Elizabeth Gilbert blends historical figures and events seamlessly within the confines of her fictional characters’ lives. The novel is told by the main character, Vivian Morris, now 89 years old, as she looks back on her adult life. Vivian narrates her story in an epistolary fashion to a woman named Angela, who has penned her a letter asking her one question: “What did you mean to my father?” What follows is a tale of New York City’s ever changing face, the glitz and glamour of the theater, adventure, heartache, and redemption.
